Every year, in the first week of September, it's the 'Grand Braderie de Lille', a gigantic flea market bringing together shopkeepers, antique dealers and part-time traders, all lining up on the pavements to sell their wares to the 2 million visitors. The Paris-Roubaix cycling road race is better known as the "l'enfer du Nord", literally meaning 'a Northern Hell'. Created in 1896, it's one of the oldest cycling races and takes place every year in March of April. Since 1968, cyclists no longer leave from Paris but from Compiègne, from where they set out on the gruelling 180 mile ride, partly over cobble stones, towards the hellish Nord.
